If Looks Could KillĬertainly, screenshots and video of Sky Gamblers – Afterburner make the game seem like a potential contender. As such, Switch owners might be lured into seeking a viable alternative for aerial action.

Bandai Namco Studios Producer Kazutoki Kono has stated that while he finds Nintendo’s hybrid an attractive platform, it’s probably a bit too underpowered to support Ace Combat 7’s technologies. With an engaging single-player campaign and an enjoyable multiplayer mode, those who possess a Switch might have been a bit envious.

It’s got plenty of flaws, but they disappear in the moment where your missiles turn the enemy into flaming wreckage.Recently, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown delivered dogfighting action to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC owners. And that’s Sky Gamblers as a whole: a breezy set of dogfights that provides excitement for as long as it’s around. There’s a sandbox mode and a relatively empty multiplayer to keep playing after the campaign, but the campaign itself does what it came to do and wraps up in a few hours. If Sky Gamblers has one strength, it’s that it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Sky Gamblers doesn’t have any real standout set pieces, but it’s well paced and varied enough to keep up its momentum.

There’s just enough context to give it purpose and keep it from feeling like a series of empty targets. Most missions understandably involve shooting waves of targets, but Sky Gamblers varies it up enough between ground and air targets, and occasionally had me do things like shoot missiles out of the sky or find and eliminate tracking jammers. Once I got used to the strange decision to map throttle and yaw to the left stick (?) performing air maneuvers was easy, requiring me to take into account just enough about gravity and thrust to make me think, but otherwise offering a lot of freedom to spin out of control.

Weapons in general have long ranges, and missiles can lock on to several enemies at once, removing the need for manual targeting and letting me nearly wipe out a squad with a single run. A sight calculates enemy speed and gives you a target to make it easier to lead machinegun fire, letting me pick off lone ships at a distance.

Shooting down enemies is almost effortless. It’s not fully functional, but you can pan around it and check out the instruments while you try to line up lead on the enemy.

The cockpit mode is surprisingly detailed, too. Seeing bullets catch up and perforate an enemy, or performing Immelmann turns, aileron rolls, and somersaults as you try to both evade and obtain missile lock is still enjoyable. Sky Gamblers: Afterburner might not have the style of other games its name invokes, but there’s still nothing like a good jet battle. None of the planes or weapon options felt meaningfully different, but the there’s no luster lost for the process of tracking down an enemy through the air. Despite that, I finished it in a single day on the strength of the sheer novelty of engaging in aerial dogfights. Let me get this out of the way here–this game is a mess, with plenty of bugs, inconsistent performance, long load times, strange controls and a laughable story. Sky Gamblers gets by a lot on the sheer appeal of its concept.
